Khyber Pakhtunkhwa possesses significant oil and gas potential, driven by its geological characteristics, exploration history, existing discoveries, and untapped areas in the province. KP is situated in the Kohat-Potwar or Upper Indus Basin in northern Pakistan, which is one of the major sedimentary basins in Pakistan. The basin is known to host significant natural resources, including oil and natural gas reservoirs.
Historically, exploration activities in KP have been ongoing for several decades, with both public and private sector entities involved in the search for oil and gas resources. The region has seen various exploration campaigns, seismic surveys, and drilling operations aimed at identifying commercial hydrocarbon accumulations. Resultantly, several oil and gas fields have been discovered and developed in KP province. These include fields such as Manzalai, Makori East, Mardankhel, Maramzai, Mamikhel and Nashpa, among others. These discoveries indicate the presence of viable prospective resources and underscore the potential for further exploration success in the KP province.
Despite existing discoveries, there are still vast areas within KP that remain underexplored. These areas offer significant potential for new discoveries of oil and gas resources, especially with advancements in exploration technologies and techniques. In addition to conventional oil and gas resources, KP also holds potential for unconventional resources such as tight gas, shale gas, and coalbed methane. These resources require specialized exploration and production techniques that could significantly contribute to Pakistan’s energy portfolio.
The government of KP, along with the national regulatory bodies such as the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the Ministry of Energy, plays a crucial role in regulating and promoting exploration and production activities in the province. A conducive regulatory environment is essential for attracting investment and facilitating responsible development of oil and gas resources as continued exploration efforts, investment in technology, and supportive government policies are essential for unlocking and maximizing Pakistan’s hydrocarbon production for the benefit of its economy and energy security.
